Stage 2A - Hort Building Kid's Stage A
Event Type:
Presentation
Overview:

Students learn about recycling, composting, the water cycle and acid rain.  Volunteers dump layers of "trash and dirt" behind a Plexiglas barrier to visually demonstrate how a landfill is built and why they are both beneficial and harmful.  Kids begin to understand the importance of conserving our forests as they watch volunteers build a tower of newspapers.  They are surprised to learn how long it takes for some of the plastic and rubber products we use everyday to decompose.  Invasive species can ruin a habitat so we bring in a REAL Se Lamprey and Zebra Mussel!

Middle school kids are presented specific problems within their own zip codes such as the water and air quality, impact of area landfills and other influences on their local environment.  We involve MANY volunteers because we know that kids are visual learners.  Don't be surprised if they teach YOU a few things about recycling, reusing and renewing YOUR environment!
