Whitewater Sustainability Initiatives

Event Type:
Presentation
Overview:

The City of Whitewater has initiated a number of sustainable projects since 2005 after being one of the first Wisconsin community signatories to the U.S. Conference of Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement.  These efforts have focused on the following areas:

1) energy reduction/savings and more reliance on alternatives energy sources (energy independence)

2) stormwater management

3) water and wastewater improvements

4) lakes management and

5) development of the Whitewater University Technologhy Park  and Whitewater Innovation Center.

The Technology Park and Innovation Center are the result of a collaborative effort of the City and UW-Whitewater to foster green and sustainable buildings and jobs for the 21st Century economy.  The Innovation Center is an award-winning LEED Gold business incubator facility that opened in February, 2011.

Whitewater can serve as an example of what communities can do to be more sustainable and what best practices can be possibly used elsewhere to achieve better enviornmental stewardship and reduced costs for stakeholders.  By sharing its successes, Whitewater hopes to assist other communitites in achieving their sustainability objectives.
